Forum: GratefulDead Subject: GREAT EARLY AUDS on the ARCHIVE. YOU LIKE?

like most, i generally listen to the board tapes....but there is something about a great AUD that is almost better.....ESPECIALLY from the early, golden years, 68-72, a great AUD supplies you with that feeling of excitement, of anticipation, of edge-of-your seatness that is so quintessentially D E A D....

because we all know so well....it's the VIBE WE LOVE: all the elements are put together so well by the Grateful Dead: OUTLAW GOODTIMES and MIND EXPANDED UNIVERSAL INTERCONNECTEDNESS and YES -- THE AFTERLIFE -- during the show, we seek to take a ride into the unknown on trails of stardust -- and they provide....

AND THE GREAT AUDS bring it all home! as much as we will always go back to the boards, nothing can bring that smile you get from a smokin HAND MADE AUD ----- DeeeeeeeeeeLICIOS!

there are many available on the ARCHIVE.....but i have only gotten up through the beginning of 70. PLEASE SUGGEST YOUR FAVORITES and let me know what i have missed. sometimes great music can trump poor quality but not always. i find this 69 show to be less than desirable quality-wise though it sounds like the music is magical:

these are some of the best i have found here:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-05-03.aud.phunk1.73.sbeok.shnf

this is one of the most outrageously great viola lees i have heard, and i cant imagine a SBD improving it any at all:
gd70-03-21.early.lee.pcrp.20184.sbeok.shnf PCRPgd1970-03-21Et09

PLEASE SUGGEST SOME OTHER GREAT AUDS AVAILABLE HERE.

You need to hear the 11/8/70 Port Chester show , the Ken & Judy Lee audience version. Stream Dark Star>The Main Ten>Jam>Dancin' In The Streets>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA and you will be amazed!! An all time performance by the band. This is some incredible sh*t! Make sure you have headphones on if possible. This is one of the Dead's finest hours! And if you still have doubts as to the power of this show and recording check out the earlier New Orleans>Searchin' segue or the fantastic Dew or Baby Blue on this show..and the audience is a trip too and a major part of the listening experience. You can hear someone with a duck call in the audiece during Dark Star being told by Bobby "C'mon now, this is serious" The crowd gets a little loose only to be silenced by Mickey's gongs and feedback by the band.. It's a really fun listen to hear the crowd interaction. This show is one of my "desert island" discs. "The Omnipotent Grateful Dead"!

11-8-70 is a must-have for everybody.

If you want to hear how close an audience recording can get to soundboard quality, listen to 7-29-88. I'm guessing NAK 700's pointed right into the stacks. It's scary good.

Here are a coupla sizzlin' AUDs from those lost, acid-soaked days of the summer of '68:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-05-18.aud.jools.18216.sbeok.shnf

http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-06-14.aud.cotsman.16532.sbeok.shnf

These two dusky gems are among my favorite '68 dates and they only make me wish there was more available from that summer. Sounds like shit was REALLY cookin' then. The boys were hot as fire and off the walls and they knew it.

I can only think of one Viola Lee that trumps the one from 3/21/70 that you posted, and that's the one from 4/26/69 on Fallout From the Phil Zone. It just RIPS and includes a nice little Caution-esque jam for the kids. It's a damn shame there isn't a stream up here for anyone without that release to listen to. I do have to say though, the 3/21 version comes real close to this one.

Your darn tutin right that's the best Viola. Holy shit that sounds so new, slowed down and stretched out. I wonder if they could of pulled it off in the other 70's years. Grate call. Speechless! I mean typeless. Shit man.

I've bookmarked this thread. There is a tremendous amount of audience stuff to get through. It seems like every link I go to gives me more info on other shows which in turn leads me to other shows, and so on and so forth. Amazing. Great thread. Thanks again.
The 3-29-68 is smokin.

Two amazing auds of two great shows are from 8/5+6/71 at the Hollywood Palladium. Even has a moment when Bobby advises the taper where the best sound can be found. Also has one of my favorite Pig moments when he introduces "Mr. Candy Weir". Good stuff and great sound.

I've made a few posts about this recently, here are the links to them:

This thread talks about some of the 1970 shows -
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=139851

And this thread goes into a lot more detail about 1970 aud recordings -
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=140176

1971 and 1972, for whatever reason, have very few good aud tapes, but one must-hear is the 4-29-72 recording which sounds better than the soundboard, and is one of the top Europe shows -
http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-04-29.aud.vernon.5250.sbeok.shnf

These are some of the better 1973 auds -
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=143455
(I goofed, though - I meant 6-26-73, not 6-30 which doesn't sound very good.)

And this is a discussion of the best 1974 auds -
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=143640

And, by the way, you've probably found this already since it's one of few decent 1969 aud tapes but I like it a lot - good recording, complete show, and a great performance!
